2008 Mazda Tribute

The SUV that comes out of the plant with the name Mazda affixed to its back end is one of the more complete in the compact segment. This shouldn't be too surprising coming from the manufacturer, which is known for cranking out cars with a zoom-zoom attitude.

The Mazda Tribute debuted in 2001. As Mazda likes to say, it has definitely stayed true to its roots as a sport utility vehicle raised by a family of sports cars. That is a statement best confirmed by drivers, of which more than a few would most likely agree.

Most of the Tribute's sportiness is accomplished through the car-based platform it uses. Like the Ford Escape, its sibling, the Tribute handles very well. Pretty soon (in the spring of 2007), a new Tribute should debut.

Available Models
The 2008 Mazda Tribute is offered in three models for 2008: DX, LX and ES.

Interior Features
The four-door 2008 Ford Tribute is a compact SUV, but it doesn't feel like that on the inside. Five passengers find plenty of space, while up to 63.9 cubic feet of cargo volume lets you pack in the goods.

The 2008 Mazda Tribute is fairly well appointed with standard goods. Base DX models come with rear privacy glass, air conditioning, cloth upholstery, a center console, power mirrors, windows and door locks, remote keyless entry and an AM/FM/CD player.

A Luxury Package is offered with LX and ES models. It includes a power sunroof, an overhead console, an AM/FM/cassette player with an in-dash 6-disc CD changer and premium speakers.

Exterior Features
A roof rack is part of the standard package of all 2008 Mazda Tributes. A rear spoiler, tubular side steps and a rear step bumper are optional.

Performance
The 2008 Mazda Tribute offers front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. It doesn't have low-range gearing, but has a dashboard switch that locks in a 50/50 front-rear torque split.

Base DX models come equipped with a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine. It produces 130 horsepower and 135 lb-ft of torque. Mated to the I4 is a 5-speed manual transmission that lets you take real control of the SUV's speed.

LX and ES models have more standard features and a stronger engine leading the way. It is a 3.0-liter V6 and it generates 200 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. 4-speed automatic is the sole transmission for this engine.

Safety and Security
The top-line ES has antilock brakes and front side airbags. These are both available with the LX trim.
