2008 Pontiac Montana

The 2008 Pontiac Montana is a minivan offered in two body lengths and with plenty of available options. Its lineup is varied, ranging from a well-priced value model to uplevel trims with such things as a trip computer. Pontiac spreads out the goods in order to attract the most amount of customers-a strategy that will continue for some time, it seems.

For 2008, the lineup is trimmed down a little from last year. One thing that remains is the commitment to safety. Extended length models offer Versatrak, an advanced all-wheel drive system that gives the minivan exceptional control in tight situations. Also for 2008, a newly available MP3 package upgrades the existing CD player to read discs recorded in MP3 format.

Available Models
The 2008 Pontiac Montana regular length is offered with a 1SA package. Extended lengths come with 1SA, 1SE and 1SX groups.

Interior Features
The regular length 2008 Pontiac Montana seat seven, while extended can seat eight. While regular length models have 120 cubic feet of total cargo volume, extended length versions have 141.

Having deleted last year's base 1SV group, all 2008 Pontiac Montana models are essentially well appointed. This is especially so starting with the 1SE group and moving up. Some of the features included are a leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls, rear radio controls, wireless headphones, a DVD player with fold-down LCD screen, a trip computer and a rear wiper.

As far as options go, you can pick up a number of stocked convenience groups, or go with stand-alone items. One such item, offered with 1SX models, is "MontanaVision." It features a DVD player with wireless remote, two wireless headsets and three auxiliary jacks.

Exterior Features
The Pontiac Montana's style is not necessarily innovative or sleek-it is a minivan, after all. Power operation for the right-side sliding door is available on all models, and for both side doors on extendeds.

Performance
The engine used by the 2008 Pontiac Montana is a 3.4-liter V6, mated to 4-speed automatic transmission. It produces 185 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque.

The Versatrak system offered for the new year makes the Montana as surefooted as they come. Fully automatic, it senses the difference between the rotational speeds of front and rear tires in low-traction conditions. Before any significant slippage occurs, the pumps engage multi-plate clutches that provide drive to one or both rear wheels.

Safety and Security
Antilock brakes and front side airbags are now an option on the 1SA model. They are standard on other Montana models.
